Count permutations (nPr) and combinations (nCr), with and without repetition, exactly β even for large n.
Also covers: nCr calculator Β· nPr calculator Β· Combinations calculator
Example: a 4-digit PIN is a permutation with repetition (10β΄). A lottery draw of 6 from 49 is a combination (49C6).
n = 10, r = 3
n is how many items there are; r is how many you choose.
All four cases are shown: order matters or not, with or without repeats.
In a permutation the order matters (ABC β CBA); in a combination it doesn't. Choosing 3 from 10 gives 720 permutations but 120 combinations.
There are 49C6 = 13,983,816 combinations, so one ticket has a 1 in 13,983,816 chance of matching all six.
When the same item can be picked again β like digits in a PIN (10β΄ = 10,000 possibilities) or scoops of ice cream from a set of flavours.
