Making an image smaller keeps it sharp: the Lanczos filter used here preserves detail better than basic browser scaling. Enlarging can't add detail, so "Don't enlarge smaller images" is on by default.
Fitting keeps the whole image and may leave space around it; cropping fills the exact size and trims the edges that don't fit. Stretching fills the size by distorting the image.
