Social Character Counter

X uses a weighted count: most characters count 1, but Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and emoji count 2, and every link counts 23 however long it is. The limit is 280 for standard accounts.

X 280, Instagram caption 2,200 and bio 150, Threads 500, LinkedIn post 3,000 and headline 220, TikTok caption 4,000, YouTube title 100 and description 5,000, Bluesky 300, Mastodon 500 (by default).

Many emoji are several Unicode characters joined together — a family emoji can be seven. Most platforms count those; Bluesky counts what you see (graphemes); X counts any emoji as 2.

It follows the rules X publishes in its open-source twitter-text library. Links are detected when they start with http, https or www., or are a bare domain on a common ending like .com or .io.
