Reading ease runs from 0 to 100, higher is easier: 60–70 is plain English. The grade level is the median of Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau, and the Automated Readability Index.
Sentences over 25 words are listed longest first. Splitting them, and swapping long words for short ones, moves both scores the most.
For a general audience, a reading ease of 60 or more and a grade level of 8–9. Technical documentation for developers is often around grade 10–12, and that's fine, but a sentence that needs rereading is still worth splitting.
Each one measures difficulty differently. Flesch-Kincaid and SMOG count syllables, Gunning Fog counts words of three or more syllables, and Coleman-Liau and ARI count letters. That's why the tool shows the median. SMOG is left out for texts under three sentences, which it wasn't designed for.
No. These formulas and the syllable counter were built and calibrated for English. Scores for other languages aren't meaningful.
Scores are kept within each formula's meaningful range: reading ease 0–100 and grades 0–18. Very dense text can produce higher raw numbers, but past 18 they don't tell you anything more.
