Around −40 to −50 dBFS works for most voice recordings. Raise it (e.g. −35) for noisy rooms; lower it (−60) for very clean recordings.
Only stretches quieter than the threshold for at least the minimum length are touched, and each cut gets a short crossfade. Leaving a 200–400 ms pause keeps speech sounding natural.
