Loudness Units relative to Full Scale — a measure of how loud audio sounds, per ITU-R BS.1770. Streaming services turn everything to a target (Spotify and YouTube about −14 LUFS, Apple Music −16), so matching it avoids being turned down.
Peak normalisation makes the loudest sample hit a level; loudness normalisation makes files sound equally loud. For podcasts and playlists, use loudness.
If reaching the loudness target would push peaks above the ceiling, the gain is limited so the audio doesn't clip. The tool tells you when that happens; it doesn't compress or limit the audio.
It implements BS.1770-4 with gating and matches the reference pyloudnorm library to within 0.01 LU on test tones. Peaks are sample peaks, not oversampled true peaks, so leave about 1 dB of headroom for MP3.
